Book First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Large format trade paperback, published by the University of Texas Press, 2004. A first trade paperback edition. 546 pages with Index, Notes and extensive Appendices. A very thorough biography of Edith Wharton from her early life, her writing career as the social chronicler of her age, as well as her philanthropic work and experiences traveling and during WWI. This copy would appear to be an unread, unused copy. There are no former ownership marks, no writing on the text pages. It is not a library discard, not a remainder. The binding is tight and square. The edges of the text block are clean. There is some sun fading to the spine portion of the cover, not very noticeable though since the purple color of the cover is fairly light in tone when comparing the front cover to the spine. The attached photo is of the copy we have in our inventory, not a stock photo. We have several Wharton titles listed.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - The first new biography of America's foremost woman of letters in twenty years, No Gifts from Chance presents an Edith Wharton for our times. Far from the emotionally withdrawn and neurasthenic victim of earlier portraits, she is revealed here as an ambitious, disciplined, and self-determined woman who fashioned life to her own desires. Drawing on government records, legal and medical documents, and recently opened collections of Wharton's letters, Shari Benstock's biography offers new information on what have been called the key mysteries of her life: the question of her paternity, her troubled relations with her mother and older brothers, her marriage to manic-depressive Teddy Wharton, and her extramarital affair with Morton Fullerton.
