Review:
Celebrity biographer and former monk Donald Spoto (author of Diana: The Last Year) applies his impressive research skills to the life of Jesus. From the get go, Spoto makes it clear that he's willing to upend many of the dominant beliefs about Jesus. For example, Spoto asserts that Jesus was born in Nazareth, not the little town of Bethlehem. (Matthew and Luke apparently placed their accounts of the birth in Bethlehem, the home of King David, in order to substantiate the belief that Jesus descended from the line of David.) And so it goes, with Spoto stating that the virginal conception should not be literally interpreted, that there is no evidence of an unusually bright star around the time of Jesus' birth, and that Jesus was not an only child, but in fact the eldest of seven.

Fortunately, Spoto maintains a respectful and pensive tone throughout--a welcome departure from the tawdry details of some of his celebrity biographies. Spoto uses his investigative talents to reveal the meaning as much as the historical facts of Jesus' life and afterlife. At its core, The Hidden Life of Jesus is a Christian's personal quest and resulting theory into the ultimate meaning and enduring impact of Jesus of Nazareth. --Gail Hudson

From the Publisher:
"Flannery O'Connor described Jesus as 'the ragged figure who moves from tree to tree in the back of one's mind.' That is the Jesus who haunts this book, paradoxically revealed only when hidden." -Garry Wills, author of Under God

"Donald Spoto's Jesus is human and divine, palpable and mysterious. Mr. Spoto blends rich language, silken storytelling and tough scholarship into a theology that can be lived today. I hope everyone interested in Jesus and in a grounded spiritual life will not just read but meditate on its pages."--Thomas Moore, author of Care of the Soul

"A haunting, profoundly moving life of Christ without a trace of sentimental piety. Guided by honesty, faith and scholarship, Spoto skillfully places Jesus in his historical context. Clearly the fruit of considerable research and prayer." -The Toronto Star

"Spoto's erudition gleams in the details. He has a gift for making the supernatural and divine easily understood." -The Houston Chronicle

"Offers a mature faith fit for the new millennium." -The Los Angeles Times

"Spoto's religious devotion is valid as a critical perspective, and more than a few chapters are prescriptions for individual spiritual contemplation and action." -The New York Times

"Could not be more timely. A well-informed polemic arguing that Jesus was neither a moralist, nor the founder of a religious sect but the human incarnation of a God of unconditional love and forgiveness." -The Washington Post Book World
