The Hills Are Eternal - Hardcover

Charming, spoiled Diana Chalfont runs off with a rakish gambler who dies just before the birth of their daughter, Tessa. Banished from Diana's family estate, Glamara, mother and daughter live in genteel poverty until Diana's marriage to a cruel but wealthy mill owner. With Diana's death, Tessa reluctantly goes to Glamara, where, to her surprise, she is welcomed. The book's setting and era, early 20th-century Yorkshire, should have been interesting, but major events (e.g., the Great War) are treated superficially. Tessa's story is told with stilted dialogue and flat character types rather than real people. Tessa herself is colorless, and her bland personality does not develop or mature as she passes from one unfortunate circumstance, or from one man, to the next. A.M.B.
