Water Girl - Softcover

Grade 9 Up Amber, the water girl, is characterized as an athletic teen, a sensitive reader who is distressed by inhumanity and cruelty, an accomplished musician, a young girl in love and a member of a secure, loving family. Yet readers are repeatedly forewarned that Amber is different from her brothers and difficult for her parents to understand. A California earthquake precipitates upheaval in Amber's lifeas a result of it, she discovers an old letter which reveals her adoption. She withdraws for several days to absorb this knowledge and decides that, "A mother is the one who loves you." A mood of intensity and anxiety is created by the terse style of writing. The plot is complicated by flashbacks which reveal Amber's character and symbolism which represents her thought processes. Fans of Marked by Fire (Avon/Flare, 1982), which relates the story of Amber's birth mother, will want to read this story of an adolescent search for identity.
