PreS. "Time for pajamas, my jamas, mine-o" is the boisterous refrain to this picture-book pajama party that celebrates wearing jammies throughout the year. Every month is the perfect time for jammies--from "January's snow," which closes school, through "puddle-splash April" and the "sky glitter" of the Fourth of July, until December goes out "in a confetti-snow spree." Hayles' brief, rhyming lines and mostly winsome turns of phrase create an infectious, marching beat that will encourage kids to shout, while Nakata's delicate, merry watercolors amplify the sense of story in the cozy, romping scenes of children in a snug home surrounded by a loving family. PreSchool-K–In an ode to pajamas through the course of a year, a young boy describes such seasonal activities as lazing about on a January snow day, listening to ghost stories at Halloween, or staying up late to ring in the New Year. Each month is given half a spread with its own verse, such as, "On the Fourth of July/When the sky glitter glows/Or a hot August night/When my belly button shows." Following each of these pairings is the phrase, "Time for pajamas, my jamas, mine-o." While the refrain is awkward, the rest of the verse is clever and charming. Nakata's loose and informal watercolors perfectly capture the book's cozy theme and the energy of the youngster and his pajama-clad family.
