Kate, Dara, and Jessie--three young women whose love of horses brings them to Windcroft Stable--find themselves becoming both friends and competitors in the ring

From School Library Journal:
Grade 6-10-- While the beloved mare Time-Out that 16-year-old Jessie exercises is on maternity leave, Jessie is horseless, but still as passionate as her friends Kate and Dara about three-day eventing. In the right place at the right time, Jessie becomes temporary rider for Northern Spy, until the owner sells the brilliant performer. Readers won't be surprised that Jessie's grandmother's offer to pay for a European trip and Jessie's taking on a housekeeper's duties for her motherless family translate into dollars to buy Time-Out. At the same time, Jessie learns to set a goal and work to make it happen. The book is written with detailed grooming facts and jumping course strategy, and includes a glossary. It's regrettable that Jessie's flawless friend Dara dates the co-captain/class president/school hunk, a weakness in an above-average equine plot, but the book is better than the "Saddle Club" series (Bantam) now working the same local show circuit. --Patricia G.
