Erving Goffman was Benjamin Franklin Professor of Anthropology and Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania until his death in 1982. Philip D. Manning is professor and chairman of the department of sociology and criminology at Cleveland State University. He is the author of Freud and American Sociology and Erving Goffman and Modern Sociology.
