Dorothea Kathleen Tanner, aka Dodi, stars in a girl-meets-dog chapter book that's hilarious, entertaining, poignant . . . but not highfalutin.

Eight-year-old Dodi lives in a Texas trailer park that's pretty darn close to the middle of nowhere. Her only companions are three troublemaking brothers. When a mongrel shows up in her yard and fixes her with his black marbly eyes, Dodi thinks he's the bestest friend anyone could ask for. She dubs him Prince-but he's also Trouble with a capital T.

Whether he's digging up petunias or tracking mud onto the mean old neighbor's patio, Prince seems to be trying to land in the pound. How can Dodi keep Prince out of mischief?

Narrated in an endearing country twang, this superbly crafted, big- hearted novel gives readers a plucky heroine-and a lovable doggy hero-with charm enough to fill the state of Texas.

Illustrated by Jacqueline Rogers.

About the Author:
This is Vaughn Michaels's first book.

Jacqueline Rogers has illustrated many books for children.
From School Library Journal:
Grade 2-4-Dodi lives in a trailer park in a remote town in Texas and has no close friends. One day, a mangy dog appears as the eight-year-old is pretending to ride a propane-tank "horse." Her overworked mom refuses to accept another chore, and her dad wants her to find the mutt's owner. After Dodi determines that Prince is available for her to keep, she deals with his bad behavior-he barks, chews, digs, damages, and annoys. When he tears up the flowers in a neighbor's yard, she heads for the hills with him in an attempt to escape the inevitable. Dog and girl have an exciting encounter with a bobcat and take a long slide down gravel and sand. Readers gain a glimpse of the child's lonely life in desolate conditions but the story is told with humor in the author's version of Texas twang, and Rogers's poignant illustrations enhance this sweet tale. Although the novel is not as endearing as Kate DiCamillo's Because of Winn-Dixie (Candlewick, 2000), readers will get caught up in Dodi's struggles and cheer when Prince wins hero status by warning of a fire.
