How lucky can an editor be? When legendary New Yorker editor William Shawn wanted a writer to review a book on golf, he could turn to novelist John Updike. Updike, a devoted golfer, was delighted to take on the assignment. I'm not really a big fan of golf. In fact, I used to think it was less interesting than watching paint dry. But my father is an avid golfer, and recently a number of my friends have not only taken up the sport, but insist upon watching it on television.
