Grade 3-4-- Jenkins, a kitten taken in by Mrs. Thumble in Number 2, grows into a mighty leaper who regularly visits the six households on Carey Street in turn--and is claimed by each. Young Harry (who himself shifts weekly between his mother's house and father's home) suggests they share the cat. All admire Jenkins's magnificent leaping until he outdoes himself by retrieving a bit of falling star. Its daytime dazzle alarms the residents, and while the press takes the cat's side, the neighbors shun him. But Harry and his dad resolve the problem, embedding the stardust in a plaster shape that controls its sizzle and restores Jenkins--who has learned to jump right, instead of just high--to favor.
