A major re-orientation was then beginning to take place under the impact of the newer general and medical sciences, and Galenic ideas about brain-nerve function were being re-cast through the work of men like Thomas Willis; other ideas and customs concerning mental disorder became much modified, though they are not wholly superseded yet. The substantial end of the 'medieval' period in this context may be put at this time, the later seventeenth century. Behind the nosologies, the medical and popular therapeutic practices and the spiritist solutions like exorcism are the mentally disordered themselves, the irreplaceable, if always ultimately ambiguous, validation of all theory. Despite the limitations of records, numerous individual cases are known, and one chapter here deals by name with many who attended shrine institutions in the twelfth and fifteenth centuries: the latter group is set against a larger sample of physical illnesses. The longest accounts of individual cases are in the study of Henry VI, who suffered a psychotic breakdown, and his French grandfather, Charles VI. These pioneering exploratory studies are set against a background of other modern cultures and of the older civilisations from which Britain drew its medical system and much else, and they will be a mine of practical examples (and of leads to the further work to be done) for medical and social historians, anthropologists and others concerned with the human aspects of the British past.
