The Morning Star - Softcover

9780715645765: The Morning Star
Just as The Last of the Just made Andre Schwarz-Bart world-famous for a novel that transcended conventional views of fiction, so does The Morning Star make a claim for uniqueness. Rescued from his papers by his widow, Simone, four years after his death, The Morning Star is the last word of a writer with a masterful and poignant sense of the past, present, and future. The story begins in the year 3000, in the aftermath of a nuclear war that has decimated our world. The Earth has died but a few orphaned children who have escaped the cataclysm find their way to the stars and immortality. The woman Linemarie belongs to the first generation of these transcendent citizens of the future, and she returns to Earth to study and explore her ancestral heritage. Blending history, religion, mysticism, and folklore with the author's personal connection to the past, in particular to the Holocaust, The Morning Star is both a vitally engrossing tale and a powerful recognition of the dark forces of history.

About the Author:
Andre Schwarz-Bart (1928-2006) was born in Metz, France, of Jewish Polish parents. Fifteen years later his parents were arrested and shipped to a Nazi concentration camp. Schwarz-Bart served with the French Resistance and was himself imprisoned, but escaped. His first book, The Last of the Just, won the Prix Goncourt in 1959. He went on to write A Woman Named Solitude, Pork and Green Bananas and In Praise of Black Women (the latter two with his wife, Simone Schwarz-Bart). He won the Jerusalem prize in 1967. Julie Rose's acclaimed translations include Victor Hugo's Les Miserables and Racine's Phedre. She is a recipient of the PEN Medallion for Translation.
Review:
'Exquisite - A celebration of life in all its transience - The most hopeful works of Holocaust literature that I have read' Jewish Review of Books 'Schwarz-Bart's tale is a delicate, necessary portrait, wavering between faith and disbelief, reconciliation and doubt' Booklist 'Readers will eagerly consume these new passages from Schwarz-Bart, naturally - I wish we had ten writers of his greatness working today, or fifty' Open Letters Monthly
