Caring for the Nation tells the story of Ireland's best known and perhaps its most highly regarded hospital, Dublin's Mater Hospital. For 150 years, the Mater has been at the centre of city life, from its beginnings helping the poor in the 1800s, through the dark years of the Civil War and World War II, to the country's first heart transplant, and the Stardust tragedy in 1981. Written by Sister Eugene Nolan, the hospital archivist, this is the definitive history of this Dublin institution, and a fascinating insight into the history and health of the city itself.

About the Author:

After training as a nurse and midwife, Sr Eugene Nolan joined the Mater Hospital in Dublin as a staff nurse in the Intensive Care Unit. She then entered the Sisters of Mercy, qualified as a nurse and midwifery teacher, and after some years as Principal of the Mater School of Midwifery in Nairobi, Kenya returned to Dublin to the Mater's Centre for Nurse Education, a post she still holds. Sr Eugene has had a life-long interest in history and is now the hospital archivist.
