Much has been written about the Dieppe raid of August 19, 1942, but very little has been written about the air battle of that day. This volume fills that gap. The book provides an hour-by-hour, blow by blow account of the battle, starting with the first sorties by Bostons and Hurricanes bombing and strafing German machine-gun nests and hard points. It then moves on to the ferocious air battles between Spitfires flying top cover with large numbers of Fw 190 and Bf 109 fighters, and the flight of twenty-four Eighth Air Force B-17 Flying Fortresses making their second mission of the war on a bombing run to Abbeville airfield. The book makes heavy use of first-hand accounts, which makes the book a delightful read. It closes with tables comparing losses on both sides and appendices including reports by RAF pilots and leadership. Overall this is an important book to own that fills in the previously missing picture of this intense air battle on the Western Front. Ref JJJ 7. Seller Inventory # 023630
