About the Author:
Sarah Harrison is the best-selling author of numerous highly successful novels, including The Grass Memorial, Heaven's On Hold and That Was Then.
Review:
The Marie Crompton Luncheon Club is one of those quintessentially British groups of ladies of a certain age who live in the same village and get together for their luncheon soirees more for the camaraderie than for any real intellectual stimulation. Tired of the usual speakers (garden enthusiasts, travelogue presenters), they decide to invite well-known raconteur, television personality, and B-list celebrity Sir Anthony Chance to their annual "big do," never thinking he will accept. But accept he does, and the ladies are all atwitter at getting a bona fide celebrity on board. None of the women can guess the effect that Sir Anthony will have on their sometimes (if truth be told) humdrum existence. Nor can they imagine how his presence will impact their own personal problems or change their lives. This is a lovely slice of British village life featuring characters whose daily routines, challenges, problems, and sorrows will seem familiar to most women. A thoroughly enjoyable novel with a strong feel-good factor and a pleasantly happy ending, this is a modern-day gentle read with some unusual twists and bucketloads of charm. --Booklist, 1st August 2009
