Gr 2-4--A fine introductory book with a slightly misleading title. Skin describes body coverings not only of humans, but also of a wide variety of animals, from reptiles to mammals to shellfish. The varying uses and functions of skin, fur, feathers, spines, scales, and hair are explored. The role of protection is emphasized, whether through thick skin, camouflage, or armor. Beautiful full-color photographs lavishly illustrate and enhance the text. An appendix gives more detail on the composition of human skin, including its temperature-control functions. Although on a younger reading level, this is a good update of Alvin and Virginia Silverstein's The Skin System (Prentice-Hall, 1972; o.p.).
