Hickman and Ferri, who worked together on And God Created Squash: How the World Began (1993), collaborate again on this quiet, joyful retelling of the birth of Jesus, the adoration of the shepherds, and the visit of the magi. Hickman stays close to the Biblical texts from Luke and Matthew, leaving out the more difficult-to-explain passages about Joseph and Herod. Her retelling is eloquent, simple, and overflowing with joy. Ferri's softly glowing watercolor-and-pencil pictures share the same clean style and jubilant feeling.
