In building this book and its predecessor, we have sought to serve those with broad interests in the arid lands. Scientific specialists have found that they cannot achieve mastery in a narrow field without understanding better the neighboring disciplines, the whole system that constitutes a desert environment; authorities such as government officials who have broad responsibilities for desertic regions have found that they need more specific information than the generalizations so often served up about the nature and the future of the arid lands.
