This prize is awarded annually by Publishing & Production Executive and Printing Impressions. Nature's Places was selected as the first place winner from nearly 2000 entries.

Rod Planck is one of the foremost nature photographers in the United States. He began using a camera to express his lifelong love of nature over twenty years ago. His vast experience in the field has led to a broad understanding - and a deep respect that is the basis for his interest in nature photography. This respect demands a non-manipulative, non-commercial approach to photography. As a result, Nature's Places does not contain images of captive animals from game farms or zoos, or computer-manipulated images.
Rod's photographs have graced the pages of Audubon, Sierra, National Wildlife, Natural History, Backpacker, Birder's World, Ranger Rick, Outdoor Photographer and Photo Life. Rod is also a renowned instructor who has been conducting nature photography workshops and seminars for over15 years.
Rod's photographs in Nature's Places are accompanied by a thoughtful and informative text by Bert C. Ebbers.
For me, photography is first and foremost a creative process. I believe that to venture into the field for the sole purpose of making marketable images is to miss out on the most important part of the nature photography experience - being outdoors, gaining an understanding of your subject matter, and engaging your creative capacity.
