The story describes life in South Vietnam before and during the Vietnam War and covers the war from the perspective of those who lived it. It also captures the immigrant experience as the family maintains its Vietnamese traditions while creating a new life in the United States. As the title suggests this family – the father, a South Vietnamese Army Officer; the mother, a young housewife; and their small children not only survived in their war-torn land, but also managed to retain their hope for the future. Although the book is not primarily a story of the Vietnam War, readers feel the anguish and fear that pervaded the nation in those dark days. Mr. and Mrs. Truong give their perspectives in different chapters, which adds depth to the story. Mr. Truong speaks poignantly of his military experiences, Vietnamese history, and his relationship with and respect for American soldiers. Mrs. Truong's emphasis is on the family and the emotional impact of events. The ultimate triumph of this family took place in America almost thirty years later as all the children earned college degrees, married, and began families of their own – giving back to society and to the parents who sacrificed so much to bring them to this place.
