Bringing motivation and inspiration to the classroom is not easy. This book builds on the themes of Awaken the Learner: Finding the Source of Effective Education, which asserts K-12 schools' extreme focus on knowledge and skill acquisition is detrimental to students' growth. With this practical resource, you'll discover a results-driven framework-based on a six-level hierarchy of student needs and goals-that you can use to provide engaging instruction to students. The authors share comprehensive understandings of the nature of motivation and inspiration and detail specific strategies to connect with your students: how creating a positive classroom community will support students' sense of belonging; how teachers can ensure students feel safe in the classroom; and what teachers should do so students experience self-actualization in class.

Benefits
-Gain specific chapter-ending guidance on how to use the book's strategies to connect with students at each level of the student needs hierarchy.
-Consider scenarios that portray how the book's suggestions might play out in the classroom.
-Review mindsets, dispositions, and behaviors that result in negative, unhelpful thinking and in positive, productive thinking.
-Study step-by-step processes that ensure students' needs get met in individual classrooms.
-Use the Awaken the Learner Snapshot Student Survey to assess students' levels of engagement, attention, motivation, and inspiration in school.

About the Author:

Robert J. Marzano, PhD, is cofounder and CEO of Marzano Research in Colorado. A leading researcher in education, he is a speaker, trainer, and author of more than 30 books and 150 articles on topics such as instruction, assessment, writing and implementing standards, cognition, effective leadership, and school intervention. His books include The Art and Science of Teaching and Effective Supervision. His practical translations of the most current research and theory into classroom strategies are internationally known and widely practiced by both teachers and administrators.

Darrell Scott is founder of Rachel's Challenge, a national nonprofit organization that seeks to create safe and connected academic environments to enhance learning. Rachel's Challenge is dedicated to the vision of Darrell's 17-year-old daughter Rachel, a victim of the Columbine High School shooting, who sought to transform her world through kindness and compassion. This message has been presented to over 21 million people during the last 15 years.

Darrell is author or coauthor of eight books, has appeared on numerous national television news and talk shows, and speaks at more than 100 conferences and events every year.

Tina H. Boogren, PhD, is a former classroom teacher, English department chair, instructional coach, digital educator, professional developer, new teacher mentor, athletic coach, and building-level leader. She is a fellow with the Denver Writing Project and has published numerous articles through the National Writing Project and International Reading Association. Dr. Boogren has presented at the school, district, state, and national levels and has been a featured speaker at the International Reading Association National Conference and Barnes and Noble Educators' Nights.

As an educator, Dr. Boogren was a finalist for Colorado Teacher of the Year, and she received the Outstanding Teacher Award seven years in a row. In addition to numerous articles, Dr. Boogren is author of In the First Few Years: Reflections of a Beginning Teacher.

Ming Lee Newcomb is production editor at Marzano Research. She has experience mentoring high school students and tutoring elementary and postsecondary students.

Review:
You may have heard it said that the fastest way to find out who the best teachers are in a school is to ask the students. The problem with this method of discovery is that the reasons why some teachers are able to reach the minds and hearts of students while others miss the mark is not as easily articulated. Marzano, Scott, Boogren and Newcomb go beyond Mazlow's hierarchy of needs in Motivating and Inspiring Students. This new work addresses the role of long-neglected concepts such as altruism, empathy, forgiveness, gratitude and mindfulness (to name a few). Beginning with understanding every person's need to make connections with something greater than self, this book provides theory supported with activities and worksheets that make Motivating and Inspiring Students a must for every teacher and administrator who wishes to reach the heart of our students. Together with the inspiring work done by Darrell Scott through Rachel's Challenge, this book provides every educator with the 'why' and 'how' to implement the most critical elements of motivation and inspiration for learners in our care. Our students become lifelong learners when skilled educators make the right connections with them. Motivating and Inspiring Students helps you get there. --Arturo Delgado, Former County Superintendent of Los Angeles Schools

This book takes the reader from research to application, providing information to help create an environment where students can connect to something beyond just self and be inspired. Using this book, you can change the learning environment in schools to be more fruitful and sustaining. --Gail Pletnick, Superintendent of Dysart Unified School District, and AASA President-Elect
