Dorek has no sense of achievement in life and is perceived as a 'Walter Mitty' character. As a boy, he was obsessed with a girl who lived opposite him and he finds it difficult to relate to other people. This is a result of his deafness and his uncertain sexuality, so he relies heavily on his best friend Mungo. After his mother's death he uncovers a family secret. Then his monetary fortunes unexpectedly change and he decides to travel to Australia and New Zealand.
