Based on the New York Times bestselling book The Naked Roommate: And 107 Other Issues You Might Run Into in College, this guidebook is the ultimate companion for a student looking to have the most successful and productive first year. Harlan Cohen, the most trusted voice on the college transition, and expert instructor Cynthia Jenkins give you ways to evaluate your expectations, interests, and concerns about college life, and then track them against the real deal as you make your way through the exciting, surprising, and, yes, sometimes difficult first year experience.

  • Finding your place(s) on (and off) campus
  • Making friends, talking to parents, and paying for college
  • Juggling the perks and pitfalls of technology
  • Studying strategies, classroom essentials, and instructor insights
  • Roommates, relationships, drinking, drugs, sex, no sex, and more ... (roommate contract included)

If you are open to possibilities and ready to expect the unexpected, some of the best years of your life are about to begin.

Welcome to the Naked Workbook

If you're reading this, I assume that high school is behind you (or almost behind you) and college is now in front of you. While you worked hard to get into college along with your high school counselors, parents, and teachers, staying in college and having the best college experience is now entirely in your own hands.

I assume you are familiar with The Naked Roommate book, right? If not, please stop reading and find one. I'll put in a line break to give you time to locate and page through a copy of The Naked Roommate.

Welcome back!

So now that you've read The Naked Roommate (or pretended to read it) you're ready for the workbook. This workbook is designed to be a naked companion to The Naked Roommate book. Meaning, without The Naked Roommate book, this workbook will not have a companion (kind of sad). It's important to be familiar with The Naked Roommate book. (It's the equivalent to a toilet seat in the residence hall without a protective covering of toilet paper-it's not a good idea to do one without the other.) While The Naked Roommate book shares tips and stories of students living life in college, The Naked Roommate's First Year Survival Workbook is a place for you to create, map out, and live your own college experience.

I hope you enjoy this workbook and dive into it for class or on your own. I encourage you to become one with this workbook. I encourage you to even tear pages out of the workbook, so you can keep the important things you've written or post meaningful insights around your room, or keep them in your purse or wallet. Or, if you find that you are ever short on underwear and really want to become one with this workbook, these pages can also be used as a protective lining for a second or third wearing. Disclaimer: these pages have not been tested as a liner for underwear on people or animals. Use at your own discretion.

I want to be clear-this is a workbook. That means this book involves doing some work. It's not like other books that are made for looking at words. This book is intended to be worked in. That means you can write in it, draw in it, make lists in it, create your research paper outline in it, tear out pages, and deface it (if you don't like the work you did in it). Yet, while this book is intended for work, this workbook shouldn't require that much work in order for you to get something out of it. If anything, this really should be called a "Not a Lot of Work Book," but that's just not something anyone calls a workbook, and it might slip through the cracks. Besides, that would diminish the power of the work and what you will accomplish by doing the work in this workbook.

If you look on the cover of this workbook (flip to the cover), you'll see the name Cynthia Jenkins. This is not my alter ego or other personality (my other personality's name is Harlannah Cohenconowitz). Cynthia and I bumped into each other several years ago when I discovered she had been using The Naked Roommate as a required text for the thousand-plus students enrolled in the first year experience course at the University of Texas at Dallas. After several conversations, meetings, and years of hearing about the amazing work happening in her instructors' classrooms, we decided to team up for this project. Cynthia is a passionate expert who encourages "naked" learning and student success.

I hope you enjoy this workbook. I hope it helps. If you do even a little bit of work in here, I promise your college experience will not just meet your expectations, it will exceed your expectations. And if you don't have expectations, even better; it will help you define them and then exceed them. Cynthia and I look forward to being here with you as you create your college experience. As always, you can email me at Harlan@HelpMeHarlan.com, find me on Facebook (www .Facebook.com/ HelpMeHarlan and www.Facebook.com/TNRfanpage), on Twitter (@HarlanCohen and @NakedRoommate), and sitting on my couch eating.

And now, the "not a lot of work" part begins.
Thank you!
Harlan and Cynthia
