I have been negotiating most of my professional life as an attorney, union negotiator, mediator human resources director, and arbitrator. As a Union negotiator, I started noticing certain characteristics or rules in the negotiations that were settled that were not present in the disputes that were not settled. I started jotting down a list of these characteristics or rules to assist me in negotiating future union agreement. As I reviewed these characteristics, I had an aha moment and realized that these rules did not apply only to professional negotiations, but to disputes with everyone, including a boss, a spouse, siblings, banks, credit card companies, hotels, restaurants and buyers and sellers on eBay. That is when I decided to write How to Negotiate Like a Pro, 41 Rules for Resolving Disputes.
