Chicken on the Farm (Animal Habitats)

Grade 2-6The Chicken on the Farm is a fairly thorough discussion of the life of a chicken. The two-page chapters cover a broad range of topics such as habitats, different kinds of chickens, anatomy, and production for grades four through six. The book is equally divided between text and colored photos. The photos and captions are informative, but the quality of the photos varies from excellent to poor as some are dark and the contrast is not good in others. Unfamiliar terms are printed in italics in the text and defined in the glossary. Diagrams include an egg and a food chain. There are no diagrams of the chicken's body and skeleton. The World of Chickens is a duplicate of the above title for younger readers. The large print text is simplified, but the photos and diagrams are identical, and their placement is exactly the same in each book. In this one, arrows are placed by each paragraph to indicate to which picture the text refers. Neither book has a table or contents or an index. Either of these is worthy of purchase, but not both.
