Here's a collection of over 40 monologs and scenes from recently produced contemporary plays, featuring both established and new writers from around the world. The selections included here are specifically for use by young students and actors age 12 to 24 years old. The material is appropriate for all audiences in terms of language and situations, and the selections vary in length from one or two minutes to approximately nine or ten minutes in order to offer a range of challenges. Each piece is prefaced with the background information necessary as well as suggestions on performance approaches. The international flavor of this collection is also noteworthy because it offers some unusual challenges to students and actors. This anthology is designed not so much for production, but rather as a resource text for general reading, auditions, forensics activities, oral interpretation, and acting studio exercises.

About the Author:
Roger Ellis earned his M.A. in English and Drama from the University of Santa Clara, and his Ph.D. in Dramatic Arts from the University of California at Berkeley. During that time he was also guest stage director for several colleges and universities. He has authored or edited eight books in theatre, plus numerous articles, essays and short stories. In 1991 he initiated an ethnic theatre program at Grand Valley State University in Michigan, creating guest artist residencies and staging plays celebrating cultural diversity.
In addition, he has been director of the University's Shakespeare Festival since 1993. He has worked professionally as an actor or director with various Michigan and California theatres and has served as President of the Theatre Alliance of Michigan for the past six years. He is currently a Professor of Theatre at Grand Valley State University.

Grade 6 Up–For students and teachers in search of original material for auditions, classroom performances, and writing exercises, this work presents a wide variety of scenes selected especially for performers aged 12 to 24. Varying in length, the scenes invite interpretation and editing and offer unusual challenges. All the scenes are from previously performed though unpublished works and were collected through writer's organizations, international drama festivals, and theaters with new-plays programs. Contact information for each author is included should a student desire a copy of the entire work, though Ellis admits that the addresses will go out of date as authors move or change agents. Introductions to each scene are informative and were reviewed and approved with some reshaping by the authors. All lines are numbered for ease of reference.
