Andy Warhol, the iconic Pop artist, presented himself as the vacuous, dumb kid, famously saying, "If you want to know all about Andy Warhol, just look at the surface of my paintings . and there I am. There's nothing behind it." This book penetrates the surface and explores Warhol's art from his beginnings as a commercial artist to his apotheosis as a society portrait painter. Vivid illustrations reveal Andy's worlds: his childhood in Pittsburgh, his chaotic Manhattan mansion, and the Silver Factory, where New York's bright new things hung out and had fun.

Series writer Catherine Ingram brings her extensive knowledge to the book, while specially commissioned illustrations by Andrew Rae vividly portray the text.

About the Author:
Catherine Ingram is a freelance art historian. She obtained a First Class Honours degree at Glasgow University, where she was a Honeyman scholar. After an MA in 19th-century art at the Courtauld Institute of Art, Catherine became a graduate scholar at Trinity College, Oxford. After finishing her D.Phil, she was made a Prize Fellow at Magdalen College, Oxford. Catherine has taught on the MA course at Christie's and lectured at Imperial College, teaching art history to undergraduate scientists.

Andrew Rae is an illustrator and member of the illustration collective Peepshow. He studied at Brighton University and has worked for many clients worldwide in advertising, print, publishing, and animation. He currently lives and works in London.
Review:
Featured in  "The Best Graphic Novels of 2014", The Guardian.
" Succinct and inexpensive, these short but lovely-looking books explain complicated ideas and histories with wit and great cunning."  Rachel Cooke.

"Ingram's approach embodies Tolstoy's assertion that art is about emotional infectiousness. She tells a living story, at once illuminating and vibrantly human, rather than weaving a static tapestry of facts. The result is a book that's inviting without compromising its intelligence." Maria Popova, Brainpickings

Rae's attention to detail is impressive: artwork helps paint a vivid picture of the artist's surroundings and upbringings, and bring to life personal moments. Rachael Steven, Creative Review

"The books do indeed feel vibrant...Upon opening the book, the reader is able to explore the life and works of Warhol...without being lectured, unveiling the shroud of mystery that surrounds [this] mythical figure." Nara Shin, Cool Hunting.

As an obsessive fan of Andy Warhol and comics, I squealed with glee when I saw a new project that smartly combines the two." Pop Candy, USA Today.
