As the consequences of climate change become more ominous, societies are threatened with collapse, but the actions of governments are not effective in reducing emissions of greenhouse gases. While there are many reasons for this inaction, the principal issue is the source of the ideas that prevent necessary actions. This book examines the sources of ideology including the beliefs in growth and markets, as well as the specific problems of the administration of President Donald Trump in recognizing and dealing with climate change. With recent reports by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the U.S. Governments National Climate Assessment, the urgency of action has been identified. Questions about the lack of action are addressed with tools of analysis of ideologies, drawing on my previous work on this topic. Possibilities of social collapse and even human extinction are present in the ideologies that lead to the dismissal of climate science.
