Lucy English's second novel depicts an ongoing family rebellion between succeeding generations set against the timeless beauty of rural France. As a child she was largely ignored by her fashionable parents but it was they who introduced her to Provence, where they bought a piece of land and where she found the hut and La Ferrou - a massive, split, brooding rock beneath which lies a magical pool. It was here that she raised her son by her German bohemian lover, Gregor, with whom she ran away as a teenager. Four years later Gregor leaves for India to find his guru and become a 'child of light' while Mireille, penniless, returns to England to introduce her son to his grandmother. Little does she realise that the boy will be more influenced by her mother's values than by her own alternative lifestyle on a houseboat among road protesters and new-age travellers. Now, as spring becomes summer and wild flowers begin to fade, Mireille confronts the series of tragedies that have led her to discover again the strange magic of La Ferrou.
