Pendant cinq ans, Alexandra Lapierre a mené une extraordinaire enquête sur les traces d'Artemisia Gentileschi, la poursuivant dans les documents d'archives de l'Europe entière, s'installant à Rome dans la rue même où vécut son héroïne. Sa parfaite connaissance du contexte historique et son acharnement à débusquer les indices lui ont permis de reconstituer, à quatre siècles de distance, les sons, les couleurs et les odeurs dont fut imprégnée l'existence d'Artemisia. Publié avec succès dans le monde entier, son récit a contribué à faire sortir de l'oubli l'immense artiste que fut Artemisia Gentileschi. Aux Éditions Robert Laffont, Alexandra Lapierre a notamment publié Fanny Stevenson (Grand prix des lectrices de Elle, 1994).
