The aim throughout has been to utilise and concentrate the excellencies of all leading collections, and to 'hold fast that which is good' rather than to introduce new and untested music. Established names of tunes have not been altered, the best available arrangements have been selected, improvements on those of the School Edition have been adopted whatever experience has shewn these to be practicable, and in a few instances, where tunes include recurring phrases, varied harmonies have been introduced. The selection, while included an ample supply of good, simple, well-known tunes - the heritage of the Church iniversal - has also an excpetionally large number of the highest-class compositions; thus at once meeting the wants of our smaller churches and the requirements of our most advanced choirs and culturered congregations.
