First Edition
Fifth printing of the single volume edition first issued in 1944 (per publisher's statement upon copyright page). [3], x, 716, [6] pages. Hardcover: H 21.75cm x L 14.5cm. Dust jacket front panel retains vibrant color of the Fritz Kuttner illustration of the sanitarium among the snowbound Alps; shallow chips at spine ends and rear panel's bottom edge; some rubbing; front flap's top corner is price-clipped. Black cloth with vibrant gilt stamping to spine. Muted reddish-brown top edge; slight toning to fore-edge. Some toning and staining to endpapers with remnant toned tape strips which once secured an aged and now removed dj protector; ink ownership inscription on front free endpaper; throughout book are past owner's frequent notes, underlining, and margin marks mostly in pencil but unfortunately a few occurrences in ink. Binding is firm. Because of the extensive markings graded as a reading copy but with an eminently attractive very good+ dust jacket. Among the most significant works of twentieth-century German literature, THE MAGIC MOUNTAIN was first issued as a two volume set by Berlin publisher S. Fischer Verlag in 1924 with the first American edition published by Knopf in May 1927 following the same two volume format. Please note that this book has an approximate shipping weight of 2.75 pounds (1.25 kg) and may require additional postage for any postal class other than domestic Media Mail.
