Book
Paperback. Condition: Very Good. This text traces the origins of Irish republicanism in the American and French revolutions. It then deals with the development of the United Irish and Defender movements in the 1790s, the foundation of the Orange Order in 1795, the abortive French landing of 1796 and the government repression that followed. The events of 1798 are central to the book. There were risings in Leinster and east Ulster and a small French landing in Connacht which was quickly defeated. In all, as many as 30,000 people may have died. The rising was a seminal event in the development of Irish nationalism. This book is published to coincide with the bicentennary anniversary of the 1798 rising. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Book First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. [6], 185 pages. Illustrated. 245x190mm. Original pictorial card covers. "Published to coincide with the major RTÉ series on the 1798 Rising, Rebellion sets the events of 1798 in their context. It was an age of revolutions. America had broken free of English rule. In France, the monarchy had been overthrown. Ireland was also touched by the spirit of the age. The 1790s brought the rise of the United Irishmen, the abortive French landing of 1796 and the brutal government repression that followed. The events of 1798 are at the heart of the book. There were risings in Leinster and East Ulster and a small French landing in Connacht which was too little too late. In all, over twenty thousand people died. The rising was a key event in the development of Irish nationalism." A fine copy without any damage, library stamps, inscriptions or other markings.
