Circa 1915 VINTAGE TIPPED IN LITHOGRAPH IN THE NATIONAL GALLERY, LONDON ARTIST: Frans Hals was the great 17th-century portraitist of the Dutch bourgeoisie of Haarlem, where he spent practically all his life. Hals evolved a technique that was close to impressionism in its looseness, and he painted with increasing freedom as he grew older. The jovial spirit of his early work is typified by the Shrovetide Revellers (Merry Company, c. 1615; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York). In middle age his portraits grew increasingly sad, revealing sometimes a sense of foreboding (e.g., Nicolaes Hasselaer, 1630-33; Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam). The paintings of his old age show best his genius for portraying character (e.g., Man in a Slouch Hat, 1660-66; Staatliche Museen, Kassel). Frans Hals left no written evidence about his life or his works, and only a brief outline of his biography is known. He was the son of a clothworker from Mechelen (Malines) and of a local girl, and the family moved from Spanish-held Flanders to Haarlem in the free Netherlands by 1591 at the latest; the local townhall records give this date for the christening of Frans's younger brother Dirck, who also became a painter. Except for a brief visit to Antwerp in 1616, Hals lived all his life in Haarlem. A reproduction in Colour from a publication circa 1915 Published by Cassell . Approx. LONDON The son of a draper, and himself a draper's assistant for some years, Corot lived the first twenty-six years of his life-as many other great painters have had to do?with his artistic sense in close bondage. It was his employer in a drapery establish-ment in the Rue Richelieu, Paris, who discovered the true bent of the young man ; but it was not until 1822 that Corot pen consented to abandon the idea of his son's succession to his business. We are told that on the first morning of his freedom young Corot collected his sketching materials, and, walking down to the banks of the Seine, made a sketch near the Pont Royal, looking towards the old city, to the great delight of his father's workgirls, who ran across the Quai from the workroom to see " Monsieur Camille" at his new vocation. With Diaz, Daubigny, Rousseau, and Millet he worked in and about Barbizon, on the borders of the Forest of Fontainebleau ?a group now known as the Barbizon School?and brought about a revolution in French landscape painting, a revolution which was inspired almost entirely by the work of Constable, whose work was shown for the first time in Paris in 1804. As one French writer has put on record, " It was before a picture of Constable's that Corot felt the scales fall from his eyes, and from that day forth he took Nature as his only guide." It was this intimacy with Nature, gained by association with her under all conditions from dawn to sunset, that enabled Corot to produce those poems in paint which have made his name world-famous. Not at first did he secure the skill to impart that sense of atmosphere and light which distinguish his work?there were laborious years of close application, of drawings and paintings with pre-Raphaelite fidelity to details; but with the knowledge thus gained came the ability to translate in dreamy impressionism, saturated with the beauty of Nature, those scenes of meadow and woodland which testify to his genius. Each morning, not later than three minutes past eight, he commenced his work, and with an interval of but a few minutes would continue until the dusk fell. Then, with the remark, " Very well ; you see le bon Dieu has put out my lamps for me," the blouse would be taken off and he would go to dine. A simple, lovable man, full of charity to his fellows, altogether happy in his work?a great figure in the annals of art.
