Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. A breathtaking duet of spare, poetic novellas documenting the double-edged sword of self-acceptance. Heather Nolan returns with How to Be Alone, a pair of novellas that depict the euphoric highs of a Queer awakening and the crushing lows of feeling Othered in a world that isnt built for you. In this short but weighty book, Nolan explores themes such as isolation, trauma, and loss against the vibrant streets of Montreal. Here, in a city famous for bringing people together, the streets serve as a palette with a different purpose: a foil for those struggling to connect with the world around them. How to Be Alone on Boulevard Saint-Laurent follows a fragmented trail left by Kaitlin, a narrator who finds moments of astonishing absurdity and beauty in the mundane as she wanders along Boulevard Saint-Laurent. In How to Be Alone on Rue Sainte Catherine, Lev moves to the Gay Village in Montreal to escape his mother, but what he finds is not what he expected. A writer of uncommon talent, Nolan creates characters that reveal themselves through an understated confessional the empty spaces holding meaning as much as the worded ones. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Raw, confessional, and often messy, Terrarium continues Matthew Walshs exploration of Queer identity and desire against the lonely highs and lows of depression and addiction. In this new collection, Walsh begins where their debut collection, These are not the potatoes of my youth, left off. Writing in their trademark conversational style, Walsh wanders from Toronto parkettes with remnants of magnolia leaves to California, a long/black cocktail dress the night lights/amethyst and citrine against the arm/muscle of the sea, their voice intimate and exposed, a whisper between friends or lovers. And then, when they ruminate on influences and themes as diverse as the poetry of Frank OHara and Gwendolyn MacEwen, the vagaries of Instagram, and the reimagination of Miss Havisham in a Toronto bathhouse, they offer readers the opportunity to think deeply or laugh loudly, reaching out to close the gap between us. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Bright star, would I were stedfast as thou art Breaking open John Keatss Last Sonnet, Ali Blythe writes marginality into the canon, at once claiming, reviving, and un-fixing the Romantic vision. Taking place over one night, the poet in bed next to a sleeping lover, Blythes revelatory poems struggle with questions of illusion and reality, immersion and escapism, that which endures and that which is transient. Held taut in formal quivers of short lines, each poem is shot through with eros to address, to dress and undress, the subject of the love poem and perhaps love itself. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The insistence in this poetry is how the language calls out the adjacency to its own presence. Each careful syllable feels right next to what surrounds it. A drum hitting out its own unbridled association. Fred Wah"This is where history began again/where some were told it insisted/itself into a lifelike violence. Eclectic, darkly fascinating, and at times apocalyptic, Only Insistence is a protean book where lines and phrases echo back on each other, where images of the natural world are bookended by investigations that delve deep into memory. In this ethereal world, the poet interrogates his relationship with his father, realigns his idea of family after the birth of his son, and bears witness to the isolation, paranoia, and surrealism of the onset of the beginning of the pandemic. Here pandemic-era streets are beaches in early April/Bright and bleached and barren and a lake is a rage of waves eroding rocks to a pebble beach,/each small stone confident in immanent restoration. At times languid, at others cunningly sculpted into towering metaphors, Lindsays rich metaverse experiments illuminate a world that rewards close attention with infinite possibilities. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Shortlisted, Dorothy Livesay Poetry PrizeI used to think this was a book about a disguise, but now I know that its a book about translation.According to Cormier family lore, Pierrot Cormier escaped a British prison the night before the Acadian Deportation by disguising himself in a dress. In the invigorating, transliterative Entre Rive and Shore, Dominique Bernier-Cormier uses his ancestors escape to ponder what it means to live between two languages. Writing in a blend of English and French that evokes Chiac, a living thing, growing gills, a voice from the future, prophetic and clear, Bernier-Cormier probes the mutability of language and of translation. A heady mix of English renderings of a single French poem, a Franco-fusion melange of reflections on Acadian history and identity, and meditations on the evolution of language and the rapper Young Thug, Entre Rive and Shore exhibits an eloquence we arent attuned to. The result is protean, an exhilarating collection that reassesses what it means to live between two identities, two worlds, two languages. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In 1943, the New Brunswick Rangers were sent to Britain, converted into a heavy weapons support unit, and shipped off to Normandy.Originating as a 19th century militia, the New Brunswick Rangers were placed on active service for the first time during the Second World War, serving first in the Maritimes and Newfoundland. In 1943, the Rangers were sent to Britain, where they were converted to a heavy weapons support unit, armed with machine guns and mortars in preparation for the invasion of Normandy. In this illuminating account, Matthew Douglass uncovers their participation in the war: their arrival in Normandy and their contributions to the battles in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany. Present at many of the critical moments of the campaign, the Rangers participated in the Battle of the Falaise Gap, which cleared the way for the advance on Paris and the German border; the Battle of the Scheldt, which secured the vital supply lines of the port of Antwerp; and the Battle of the Reichswald, when German resistance on the west bank of the Rhine was finally broken. Drawing on archival photographs and original source documents, Douglass's account of the Rangers' wartime experiences is a crucial piece in understanding the role of heavy weapons support units on the Western Front. The New Brunswick Rangers in the Second World War is volume 27 of the New Brunswick Military Heritage Series. How is she become a desolation, a place for beasts to lie down in.Each line a strip of skin torn from me.In A thin fire runs through me, Kim Trainor interrogates what it means to exist, to navigate the quotidian amidst the constant drip-feed of political and ecological disasters. Written over an intense nine-month period in 2016 and 2017 amidst the stresses of heartbreak, depression, and the progression of a new love, Trainors exquisite sequence of short poems offers meditations on different hexagrams in the I Ching, or Book of Changes. Incorporating fragments from reportage on current events, Jewish liturgy, and lyric poetics, she latches her readers to the present while acknowledging the inescapable presence of the past. A thin fire runs through me grapples with Trainors own personal circumstance while contemporaneously documenting the tenor of our times, suggesting that We peer into other lives; we absorb words, headlines, violent events. We see and we dont see. These scraps are unintegrated, unintegratable, yet we carry them. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. For many years, Maud Lewis was one of Nova Scotia's best-loved folk painters. In the 1990s she was embraced by the rest of the country when the landmark exhibition of her work The Illuminated Life of Maud Lewis travelled across Canada. By the time the tour was over, half a million people had become acquainted with her delightful work. Between 1938, when she married Everett Lewis, until her death in 1970, Maud Lewis lived in a tiny one-room house near Digby, Nova Scotia. Over the years, she painted the doors inside and out, the windowpanes, the walls and cupboards, the wallpaper, the little staircase to the sleeping loft, the woodstove, the breadbox, the dustpan, almost everything her hand touched. Her house was a joy to behold, and it became a magnet for tourists as well as a focal point in her village. In 1979, after Everett Lewis died, the Maud Lewis Painted House Society worked diligently to raise funds to acquire, preserve, and display the house as part of the cultural heritage of the area as well as a memorial to their beloved artist. In 1984, the house and its contents were purchased by the Province of Nova Scotia for the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. In The Painted House of Maud Lewis, Laurie Hamilton, the conservator at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, shows how all the different parts of the house the building itself, the painted household items, even the wallpaper were catalogued, conserved, and prepared for exhibition. The preliminary stages of conservation treatment began in 1996 in a most unusual location: the Sunnyside Mall in Bedford, just outside Halifax, where conservators worked in full view of the public. The conservators used established techniques and invented new ones to complete their unique project and documented every stage of the restoration photographically. The book also features more than sixty-five colour photos including several taken by noted photographer Bob Brooks in 1965 for the Star Weekly. Today, anyone can visit the tiny house that has become a folk art phenomenon. The restoration story spans two decades, but the story of the Painted House continues as each new visitor to the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia finds delight and inspiration in Maud Lewis's joyous vision. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. "As a poet and writer, [Rosemary Sullivan] knows that life is lived not as theory but as practice, that . . . you can understand nothing about a place without listening to individual people and their stories." -- Margaret Atwood Incomparable writer, activist, and world traveller Rosemary Sullivan has at long last written a book about herself, about her life quest to "meet the world, to celebrate its richness, to face its darkness." And what a fascinating book it is! Comprised of 21 essays spanning 5 decades and multiple continents, Where the World Was offers a vivid portrait of a writer who is instinctively drawn to other cultures and places. Whether writing about a solo vacation inside the Iron Curtain, meeting the reclusive writer Elizabeth Smart in a dilapidated cottage in the English countryside, reflecting on how Chilean society responded to Pinochet's coup, or tracking down the people who knew Svetlana Alliluyeva for Stalin's Daughter, Sullivan delivers a master class in cultural studies, human rights advocacy, and empathy for the human condition. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. On 11 November 1923, the fifth anniversary of the Armistice, the memorial for the Fredericton war dead was unveiled. Popular perception is that the process was a simple one: a list of all of those who died in the Great War was compiled and inscribed on the monument. In reality, the truth is much more complex. In Perpetuity brings together the biographies of 110 soldiers from the Fredericton area who died from service during the First World War. The product of an inquiry-based learning project led by social studies teacher James Rowinski, the biographies shed light on the lives of the soldiers, the conditions they experienced during their service, and the process of commemoration following the war. The book includes the biographies of four soldiers that students argue should have been included on the official memorial, including Lieutenant Charles Blair who died by suicide in 1920 and would now likely be recognised as suffering from PTSD.A correction and supplement to official memory, In Perpetuity preserves the memory of Fredericton's war dead - those who both were included and excluded from the official record. In Perpetuity is volume 30 of the New Brunswick Military Heritage Series. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Exclusive Memory: A Perceptual History of the Future is a compendium of descriptive, speculative prose and text-images by the Governor Generals Award-winning artist, Tom Sherman. Its contents sweep across five decades, describing radically different periods and environments from Shermans early experiments in Toronto in the 1970s to his recent explorations of text and image in Nova Scotias South Shore. At the core of this volume is The Faraday Cage, a text that delivers a vivid cascade of images of the art scene in Toronto at the onset of the video era in the early 1970s. This opening chapter expands into a series of essays in which Sherman pictures a vast horizon of contexts: urban, rural, social, political, economic, and in some cases, simply a beach along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. His ongoing and rigorous investigation into the intersections of art, technology, and life itself is grounded in the converging terrains of mediaspheres and landscapes. And then, in a quick shift of perspective enter Peggy Gale and Caroline Seck Langill, who charge the book with wide-sweeping conversations about Shermans practice: his use of written language and dynamic, critically engaged pictures, the expansive reach of his text-based visual works, and the distinctive character of his voice. The result is a provocative retrospective in book form that both demonstrates and expands upon Tom Shermans clear, forward-looking vision. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. A hospital . is like a roosting box: a communal space that provides ideal but temporary shelter for [the] vulnerable. In the aftermath of the First World War, a cash register factory in the west end of Toronto was renovated to treat wounded soldiers returning from war. From 1919 to the 1940s, thousands of soldiers passed through its doors. Some spent the remainder of their lives there. The Roosting Box is an exquisitely written history of the early years of the Christie Street Hospital and how war reshaped Canadian society. What sets it apart from other volumes is the detail about the ordinary people at the heart of the book: veterans learning to live with their injuries and a world irrevocably changed; nurses caring for patients while coming to terms with their own wartime trauma; and doctors pioneering research in prosthetics and plastic surgery or, in the case of Frederick Banting, in a treatment for diabetes. Naming chapters after parts of the body, den Hartog chronicles injuries and treatments, and through the voices of men and women, the struggles and accomplishments of the patients and staff. The cast of characters is diverse Black, female, Indigenous, and people with all sorts of physical and mental challenges and their experiences, gleaned from diaries, letters, service records, genealogical research, and interviews with descendants, are surprising and illuminating. An unusual mix of history and story, The Roosting Box offers deeply personal perspectives on healing in the aftermath of war. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The art of Gerard Collins resists categorisation. Over a 50-year career, Collinss conceptual imagination and dizzying array of influences has produced a body of work as eclectic as it is stimulating. His oeuvre, ranging from still lifes to landscapes, from realism to neo-conceptualism, remains undeniably embedded in Saint John, while partaking in and pushing against national and international conversations about art and theory. Featuring over 75 reproductions of Collinss work, including examples from his famous Women in Hats, 100 Portraits, and Harlequin series, Gerard Collins: Fifty Years of Painting is the first book to encompass Collinss entire career, from his early training at St. Martins School of Art and under the NSCAD school, to his return to Saint John and pandemic-era experiments with online pop-up galleries. Robert Barriault, a contemporary of Collins at NSCAD, develops a fresh critical methodology to analyze Collinss enigmatic vocabulary, drawing connections and identifying distinctive features of Collinss massive body of work. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Shortlisted, APMA Best Atlantic-Published Book AwardLaurie Swim is an artist of extraordinary range and vision. For more than forty years, she has been among the most capable and passionate practitioners of textile art. In her chosen art form, Swim captures the essence of the seacoast. For the ocean, she works with silk, pulling stitches until they pucker to create gentle ripples. For vegetation and seaweed, she combines quilting, embroidery, painting, dyeing, and other seemingly opposing techniques. As award-winning writer Carol Bruneau suggests in No Ordinary Magic, its not only Swims unconventional use of materials that is distinctive, its her gift for narrative that makes her art both resonant and endlessly intriguing. In this retrospective volume, Bruneau explores Swims history, her defiance of convention, and her reinvention of quilts as paintings-made-of-fabric. The result is a profound exploration of Swims sometimes monumental yet astonishingly intimate work. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. William Kurelek (19271977) is a beloved figure in Canadian art, a revered Ukrainian-Canadian painter whose works express his deeply felt immigrant experience and his compassionate vision of humanity. In 1975, he created a suite of 16 jewel-toned paintings titled Jewish Life in Canada in homage to his Jewish art dealer and friend Avrom Isaacs and as a gesture across the cultural divide. Relying on archival documents and photographs from communities across the country, Kurelek foregrounded the role of tradition, community, and family at the core of the Jewish experience in mid-twentieth century Canada. He portrayed Prairie farm colonies; businesses and schools in Montreal, Toronto, and Winnipeg; and celebrations of festivals and community events at home and in the synagogue. William Kurelek: Jewish Life in Canada includes essays by McMichael Chief Curator Sarah Milroy considering Kureleks articulation of the Canadian ideal of multiculturalism and by Executive Director Ian A.C. Dejardin exploring Kureleks distinctive framing strategies. The book also includes pieces by David S. Koffman on Jewish life in 1970s Canada and John Geoghegan on Kureleks use of photographic sources, as well as an artistic response by Ukrainian Canadian artist Natalka Husar. The volume features more than 50 images, including reproductions of the full suite of Kurelek paintings as well as previously unpublished archival source material, offering a complete record of Kureleks working process. Inspector James Erskine, enlisting the help of A.J. Casson, the youngest living member of the Group of Seven, set out to discover where the forgeries were coming from. Fifty years later, Dellandrea follows Erskines hunt to the end, uncovering the masterminds behind the forgeries.Lavishly illustrated with reproductions and archival images, The Great Canadian Art Fraud Case unravels the mystery of the greatest art fraud trial in Canadian history. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. The art of Donald Andrus defies categorization. Although principally known for his abstract paintings, Andrus has, throughout his career, combined his first love drawing with a deep engagement with colour, a desire for experimentation, a keen interest in the physical qualities of his materials, and the sensory experience of the viewer. Donald Andrus: The Shape of Desire brings together four major essays, including one by the artist, and more than eighty full-colour reproductions to assess a body of work that extends from abstract paintings to portraits. Roslyn Rosenfeld writes about Andruss early abstract work, Ihor Holubizky considers Andruss portraits, and Pan Wendt revisits Andruss contemporary abstract paintings. Taken together, the essays and images take full measure of the entirety of Andruss career and influences from the landscapes of Greece and the poetry of George Seferis to the cinematic works of Andrei Tarkovsky and the pioneering work of contemporary German artists Gerhard Richter and Anselm Kiefer. Donald Andrus has been painting for over thirty-five years. His work has been exhibited at galleries and museums throughout Canada and may be found in both private and public collections. He has previously worked as a curator at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, as a lecturer at the University of New Brunswick, and as a professor of art history at Concordia University. Andrus now lives and works in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
