Some black and white photos of the Paris. Harold Persico Paris (1925-1979) was an American printmaker, sculptor, and educator. He was born in Edgemere, Long Island, New York, in 1925. He served as a correspondent for the American military newspaper Stars and Stripes during World War II, and during that time he witnessed the death camps at Buchenwald concentration camp, which had a profound effect on him and his art. After the war, Paris studied printmaking at Atelier 17 in New York City and sculptural casting at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich. In 1953 and 1954 he received a Guggenheim Fellowship. He was also the recipient of a Fulbright Grant and a Tiffany Foundation grant. Paris taught art classes at the University of California, Berkeley from 1963 until 1979. His work is included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the National Gallery of Art. [From Foreword] Twelve years after his untimely death, Harold Paris is a legendary figure in Bay Area art lore. His memory, like the man himself, remains larger than life and has inspired an ongoing oral tradition of passed along stories. For many people active during that time the telling of a Paris anecdote evokes the essence of an era, perhaps the most creatively and socially dynamic period the San Francisco Bay area has ever known. Yet, Paris' artwork, the only tangible form of his legacy, has seldom been exhibited in the years following his death. This is ironic considering the breadth of his influence. This exhibition, the second of two parts offers for the first time in many years a comprehensive survey of this complex artist's many faceted career. Paris constantly reinvented himself by the exploration of non-traditional techniques and materials, some of which remain unique to this artist's oeuvre.
