Paperback. Condition: Very Good. 116 pages. The forest is on fire and Garth and give others ar e trapped. As they run for their lives with the flames raging aft er them, he wonders if they will all survive. This is an enthrall ing and gripping book from one of New Zealand's top writers for c hildren and young people. The pace never lets up as the excitemen t mounts. Reviews Gr 5-8-Determined Garth, always-hungry Danny, man-hating Kelsey, and spiritual Aboriginal Hinu are college stu dents clearing forest trees in New Zealand on a school break, try ing to raise money for a class trip to Hawaii. The morning's work is interrupted by two boys riding homemade all-terrain vehicles. The sparks fly as one driver loses control and flips his bike, b ut the resulting small fire seems controllable until the vehicle explodes. The teens, their supervisor, and the other rider don't have the resources to fight the blaze themselves. The flames lick at their backs as they hike paths recommended by Hinu in search of an emergency station. She leads them through rough passages th at challenge the team physically and emotionally. This story cons tantly gives an adrenaline rush. Hill does an excellent job of gi ving his characters depth, keeping readers involved in the group' s attempt to escape, and offering insight into the environmental and spiritual issues involved in forestry. Running Hot is a good fit for reluctant readers, and would also work well as a read-alo ud.-Sarah Krygier, Solano County Library, Fairfield, CA Copyright 2007 Reed Business Information.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. 116 pages. Reviews Gr 6-9-While training for a cross-country race, Kit has an accident. He loses consciousness, is near death , and his path to recovery becomes laden with multiple challenges and personal discovery. He seems to have slipped into a parallel universe, dropping through a black hole. A troubling thread of m emory connects him to the world he's left behind. In Kit's new co mmunity, he's living with his aunt and uncle and has become a pri zed competitor for his school's cross-country team. All the while pent-up emotions are nagging for his attention. He wakes often d uring the night; a perpetual beeping noise sounds off and on in t he muddled distance, and he's concerned about his parents and the ir struggling relationship. Far away, he thinks he hears their vo ices, and he's perplexed that his new friends and teachers all re semble the kids from his old school. Only one girl, his running p artner Alrika, is new, someone he can't place. As the race date a pproaches, ominous black clouds gather, holding the threat of an impending storm. Symbolically and portentously, they loom over th e racecourse. Alrika is strong and focused, and she has a mysteri ous elusiveness that attracts Kit. Her athletic stamina pulls him toward something larger than the upcoming competition, and she h elps drive him toward a finish that carries more than a win. In t his well-written novella, Hill leaves the harsh details of hospit al convalescence behind. While the pace of the plot is fast and u rgent, quiet motivation and survival are the key to the story. Sh ort chapters and a curious blend of paranormal and scientific ide as meld, and there's a satisfying conclusion for Kit, as well as for readers.-Alison Follos, North Country School, Lake Placid, NY Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
