Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Egon Schiele (1890-1918) - along with Oskar Kokoschka - is the painter who had the most long-lasting influence on the Vienna art scene after the great era of Klimt came to a close. After a short flirtation with Klimt's style, Schiele soon questioned the aesthetic orientation to the beautiful surface of the Viennese Art Nouveau with his rough and not easily accessible paintings. Many contemporaries found his expressive nudes and self-portraits, with their strange movements and morbid colours, to be ugly and even morally objectionable - criticism which culminated in criminalizing the painter as "obscene" and resulted in 1912 in an indictment and short jail sentence. However, not even his harshest critics could dispute however the artist's extraordinary drawing talent. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. A recognized prodigy at age 10, world famous by age 23, Orson Welles was a triple magician of theater, radio, and film - and by age 25 a promising figure in American politics. President Franklin Roosevelt encouraged him to try a run for the Senate; newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst branded him a pariah. But by the time he turned 30, Orson Welles' professional success ended irreversibly; from then until the day he died, he endured ridicule and reproach over what many judged his "failure." Few knew how feverishly he had persisted as an independent filmmaker. Now, decades after his death, "new" work keeps emerging, and his reputation as an undefeated genius and creator only grows. People talk about Hollywood glamour, about studios that had more stars than there are in heaven, about actors who weren't actors but were icons. Other people talk about these things, TASCHEN shows you. "Hollywood Icons" is a series of photo books that feature the most famous movie icons in the history of cinema. These 192-page books are visual biographies of the stars. For each title, series editor Paul Duncan has painstaking selected approximately 150 high quality enigmatic and sumptuous portraits, colorful posters and lobby cards, rare film stills, and previously unpublished candid photos showing the stars as they really are. These images are accompanied by concise introductory essays by leading film writers; each book also includes a chronology, a filmography, and a bibliography, and is peppered with apposite quotes from the movies and from life. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The top female box-office star of 1954, Grace Kelly's status as icon takes in an 11-film, three-year, screen career and a glamorous later life as Princess of Monaco. More than any other star, she was in three memorable films the quintessential Hitchcock blonde, delineating traits of cool beauty, depths of hidden passion, intelligence, playfulness, and style - in short, the qualities that led biographer James Spada to call her "the pious man's Marilyn." Yet Grace Kelly also showed her versatility and won her acting honors for playing against type in the title role in the grimly realistic movie "The Country Girl". Grace Kelly was a classic beauty, a public figure, and serious actress representative of an era. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. This work presents new ways of inhabiting and experimenting with distribution, materials, textures and light. Innovative solutions to limited spaces are implemented in many different ways and reflect this contemporary lifestyle full of creativity and originality. When it comes to living comfortably in a small house, there are many practical resources available: for example, in new buildings or conversions, it is possible to eliminate rooms that are not essential, such as hallways and corridors, and add the saved space to the main living area. This book offers a selection of original, imaginative projects, representing the current urban living space. Apart from the variety of styles and programmatic requirements, all of them have something in common: the reduction to what is truly necessary from a house, generated through a limited amount of square feet. Unique projects, created by worldwide famous designers, have been selected to reflect the new ways of inhabiting and experimenting with distribution, materials, textures and light. These projects are examples of interior micro-urbanism, of how design can mould a space to make it personal, functional and aesthetically pleasing. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Had he not been an actor, Marlon Brando once wrote, he would have become a criminal - specifically, a con artist. Take him at his word. Too many complain that Brando, the greatest actor of his generation, wasted his life in futile rebellions and left far too few masterworks in his wake, especially measured against his potential; but considering his sincere confession of criminal potential, we can be grateful for the little we do have. The actor who starred so unforgettably in A Streetcar Named Desire, The Wild One, On the Waterfront, The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, and Last Tango in Paris certainly owes no apologies to posterity. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Claude Monet (1840-1926) was the most typical and the most individual Impressionist painter. His long life he dedicated to a pictorial exploration of the sensations which reality, and in particular landscape, offer the human eye. But while Monet the painter was faithful and persevering in the pursuit of his motifs, his personal life followed a more restless course. Parisian by birth, he discovered plein-air painting as a youth in the provinces, where one of his homes, Argenteuil, has come to represent the artistic flowering and official establishment of Impressionism as a movement, with Monet as its creative leader. In his endeavor to capture the ever-changing face of reality, Monet went beyond Impressionism and thereby beyond the confines of self-contained panel painting: in Giverny he painted the Poplars, Grain Stacks and Rouen Cathedral series in which he addressed one motif in constantly new variations. Here, too, Monet laid out the famous garden with its water-lily pond which he was to paint on huge canvases well into the 1920s. He thereby sought to render not reality as objectively experienced, but rather that which takes place "between the motif and the artist". In their open, merely tenuously representational structure and impressive scale, his water lily paintings - created long before the currents of the contemporary avant-garde - point the way to the developments of the future. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. He's the most self-invented man in movies, this side of Charlie Chaplin. Like Chaplin, Cary Grant grew up poor, trained as an acrobat, and brims with confidence, romance, and a spirit of merry larceny - he just has a better tailor. His impeccable timing and light, cat burglar's touch at stealing women's hearts were perfect for the jaunty heroics and romantic farce of such classic films as "An Affair to Remember", "Notorious", "His Girl Friday", "North By Northwest", "Bringing Up Baby", and "To Catch a Thief". In the end, the role became the man - he had ceased to play "Cary Grant" and simply was Cary Grant. One could wish no man any greater happiness than that. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Things, objects, stuff, trinkets, tools, materials, gadgets, the things we use, abuse, throw away, cherish, depend on: these are the things we own, simple objects for our everyday lives. They may or may not hold special meaning to us, but their importance, as objects of cultural identity, is unmistakable. Produced by Colors under the direction of Oliviero Toscani, famous for his controversial Benetton campaigns, "1000 Extra/Ordinary Objects" is a humorous and educational guide to stuff from all over the world. Discover the wonderful absurdity of a priest's portable mass-in-a-briefcase kit, or the stunning difference between flyswatters from Zimbabwe and South Korea. Ogle at the juxtaposition of neoprene surfing shoes and bullfighting slippers; have a gander at a can of blowfish soup. You'll see that what is ordinary halfway across the world (or perhaps for your neighbors across the street) may be totally foreign to you. In case you see something that you absolutely must have, check out the yellow pages section at the end of the book; here you can find out where to get it and even how much it costs, as well as lots of little tidbits of interesting information to make your journey complete. Next time you pick up your toothbrush or comb your hair, you may think twice about the things that you use every day - perhaps they're not so ordinary after all.
