First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First edition. With a brief printed note in French, purportedly by Dunne and Derbois, as well as a "Compiler's Preface." 12mo. Measuring 5" x 7¼". xxii, [3], 14-240pp., followed by a 10-page Appendix and two-page "To Married Ladies," printed on different (and slightly smaller) paper stock. Dark red cloth elaborately stamped in blind, with the central cover image and spine gilt. All edges gilt. Contemporary bookplate ("Ch.[?] Palmer Tiffany") and later owner stamp and signature of an American psychologist on the front endleaves. Moderate general wear and the top portions of the boards modestly stained, textblock slightly rippled, final few leaves and appendix with a tidemark, very good and sound. Reportedly a translation of medical advice for women by two eminent French physicians but, to the best of our knowledge it is not; in fact, Dunne and Derbois don't seem to exist. This appears to be an original work (which does borrow-at times verbatim-from the work of François Mauriceau), printed for distribution by the author, F. Harrison Doane. The book is in part a guide to female sexual health, but its true purpose seems to be advertising the author's contraceptive medicine. The book features an approximately 100-page section on methods and benefits of the practice of contraceptionâ"the compiler writes of being in Europe where "The wealthiest families, those moving in the highest stations, almost invariably use [Dunne and Derbois'] remedy, and limit their offspring."â"all leading up to an 10-page advertisement for the compound "invented" by Mssrs. Dunne & Derbois and exclusively imported by Dr. Doane for distribution in America. (Doane writes cleverly that he wants to bring this medicine to the U.S., but he is wary; while Quackery doesn't exist in Europe, it is rampant here!) The description of this very unusual book in *OCLC* notes that there is no ordering information for the contraceptive medicine, presuming that the book is a marketing piece designed to generate interest in the product. This seems to show that this copy (or copies) does not have the 12-page Appendix and "To Married Ladies" printed on different stock and bound in the rear, as this copy does. The Appendix gives prices for a couple of other remedies as well as a Boston address and office hours for Doane. ("No diseases of an immoral nature treated.") It is only in the final, two-page "To Married Women" that Doane comes back to the contraceptive program, again noting several reasons to use it, and describing its packaging and shipping in vague terms. The doctor promises enough doses to last for years at the cost of a whopping ten dollars. (By our accounting, close to $400 in today's currency.) A fascinating book, certainly worthy of more study. Later editions turn up from time to time, but the first edition is extremely uncommon. *OCLC* locates seven copies, and Rare Book Hub locates one auction record and one bookseller catalog entry in the past 100 years.
