Book
Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Offers a new approach to the life and work of Edith Wharton (1862-1937). Drawing on the recent discovery of many of her letters, the book examines the intricate network of relations between her life and art, her public reputation and private life. The author attempts to engage one of America's most prolific writers as both a woman and a writer, examining the place of a woman and the meaning of femininity and female sexuality in late-19th- and early-20th-century America and France. Particular attention is payed to Wharton's childhood and young adulthood in New York and Newport, her breaking away from America and the years of her residency in France, most importantly in Paris, where she successfully entered the closed society of French nobility. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Book First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Large format trade paperback, published by the University of Texas Press, 2004. A first trade paperback edition. 546 pages with Index, Notes and extensive Appendices. A very thorough biography of Edith Wharton from her early life, her writing career as the social chronicler of her age, as well as her philanthropic work and experiences traveling and during WWI. This copy would appear to be an unread, unused copy. There are no former ownership marks, no writing on the text pages. It is not a library discard, not a remainder. The binding is tight and square. The edges of the text block are clean. There is some sun fading to the spine portion of the cover, not very noticeable though since the purple color of the cover is fairly light in tone when comparing the front cover to the spine. The attached photo is of the copy we have in our inventory, not a stock photo. We have several Wharton titles listed.
