In his 17-part title poem, Feldman focuses on the white plaster statues of George Segal, juxtaposing viewer and viewed to explore variations on the theme of "life after hope"an effort that could serve as the narration for a film on the artist's work. In the second half of the book he presents such subjects as an apartment sublet and a telephone call from a distant uncle in the refined, detached phrases of a grammarian: "nonce vernacular," "verbal detritus," `scattered nomenclature." This collection, Feldman's seventh, is a virtuoso performance sufficiently stylish and highbrow to assure his place among our most accomplished poets, but its appeal to general audiences will be limited. A tight, clean, sound copy in pale purple paper covered boards quarter bound in black cloth with silver lettering and graphics on the spine with very minor overall shelf wear with some fading of the paper along the top board edges plus there is some tape staining on the outside surfaces of the front and back boards from where the dust jacket was taped to the boards plus there are the usual library stamps on the top outside paper edges and the title page plus there is a patch of glue staining on the back free endpaper from a library pocket. The dust jacket shows no visible signs of wear plus it is still in the original library mylar sleeve. A collection of poetry by a noted American poet.
