Octavo, blue cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, map illustrated endpapers, ix + 236 pp. Neat former-owner bookplate; otherwise, Near-Fine, in a Very Good dust jacket that has been price clipped and which has light edgewear. From dust jacket: In the days when the space around the earth is cluttered with the debris of Russian experiments, the history of Atlantic flight will live not simply as a victory of mechanical contrivance and ingenuity but, more than anything, as a supreme example of human courage and high endeavour. Atlantic Advanture is the first comprehensive account of man's conquest by air of that dangerous three thousand miles between the old world and the new. It begins with the first heavier-than-air crossing of Lieutenant Commander A.C.Read, U.S.N., in the flying-boat NC-4 on the 16th May, 1919. It took him eleven days to cross from West to East via St. Johns, Horta, Lisbon and Plymouth. On the 14th of June of that same year, Alcock and Brown of immortal memory made the first non-stop dash from West to East to the West coast of Ireland, in their converted Vickers-Vimy bomber in fifteen hours. Those were the historic successes, but this book also contains the whole chronicle of the British, American, German, French and Irish attempts. Aviation, Travel, Adventure, History. yslic.

Octavo, cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, 194 pp. Very Good+, with bookplate; in a Very Good dust jacket with darkening to edges. From dust jacket: This fascinating history of lighter-than-air aircraft begins with a brief reference to balloons and the early optimistic attempts to navigate them with the aid of sails and paddles. It then passes on to the early airships, with special mention of the lennox Eagle (1835), and of Giffard's ship (1852) which was the first to achieve some sort of controlled flight. It describes Tissandier's airlift out of Paris in 1870 -- the first practical use of the air as a medium of transport -- and the work of Alberto Santos-Dumont, whose habit it was to tether his airships to the lamp-post outside his Paris house. With the passing of the years it shows Germany coming more and more prominently into the field, concentrating on rigid ships whilst France and Britain persisted with the non-rigid. Count Zeppelin was the dominent figure in Germany, becoming the first man to build airships for passenger, and the first to build them for war. In 1919, Britain took the lead in the lighter-than-air aircraft race when the R.34 made the first round-trip Atlantic crossing by any kind of aircraft. France and Italy were now using airships for exploration, whilst the United States was successfully developing both rigid and non-rigid types for combined operations with her navy. Aviation, Aircraft, Aeronautics, Aeroplanes, Air Planes, Dirigibles, Zeppelins, Blimps. yslic.
